How much lubricant does a gearbox hold?
Having injected Morris semi fluid grease into my '39 dollshead gearbox (using a large metal syringe) until it appeared full, I find when I come back from a ride that the grease is oozing from just about all possible places on the case, spraying grease as I ride and leaving large dollops everytime I stop. Hopefully I have just overfilled it and this will abate sometime in the future...or..I have a more serious issue with the box. Can anyone advise?
Also does anyone know of any literature on the Dollshead showing an exploded view, specifically there is a strange rectangular brass projection thingy about one inch behind where the clutch cable attaches to the connecting arm, what is that for???

Chris,
It sounds as if you have put too much grease in. It should be level to the bottom of the filler plug hole. I usually give a squirt of grease before a long run, you do not need much in there to lubricate. I can supply a photocopy of the relevant pages from the WD manual which also includes several exploded views. If you can send me a photo of the brass "thingy" I will see if I can identify it. |

Chris,
Mike is certainly right about the lubricant level below the filler plug hole.
I think it takes about a pint to fill up to that level.
Cheers
