Some tricky sidecar stuff.....

Firstly,
does anyone have a Cruiser sidecar fitted with the original optional sidescreens or any idea of the measurements of any of the component parts ? I can work out the distance between the frame upright members as I have the recess points in the arms, but I have no idea of the gauge of material used or the actual height of the sidescreens.

Secondly,
does anyone know if any of the sidescreen panels were hinged at any point for example to permit ease of stepping in or out of the sidecar ?

Finally,
having examined another 1936 Cruiser sidecar at the National Motor Museum today, I am puzzled as to the type of forward facing light which was fitted to the mudguard. Mine has a very small light fitted ( about 2 inches diameter ) which seems identical to the catalogue one. However, the one in the museum has one which bears the same 'Road King' badge as the usual headlight and is about 4 or 5 inches in diameter. I haven't seen this light on any others yet. Comments ?

As always, any and all thoughts and information gratefully received, Paul Wilson

Cruiser sidescreens have a sandwich metal frame, one side being rectangular in section the other (outer side ) is slightly domed.the fixing pins are bolted to the framing.
There is a flexible skirt that encompasses the bottom edge & the leading edge, to help form a weather proof seal.
The leading edge of the screen is curved to fit to the main windscreen shape.
The windscreen has an 'L' shaped section to the front , inside which the celluloid is fitted, after the celluloid comes a plain strip that sandwiches the lot. The brackets for the framing are bolted to the frame & to the scuttle.
Do not use celluloid, but a type of plastic sheet that is used for industrial machine tool guards, being shatterproof. In 2mm thickness it will take the necessary bend without heat or anything.

Hi Paul,

Do you still need the sidescreen measuremeants?

If so, I have a pair of original sidecar sidecreen frames. I have the inner and outer parts for each. Let's make some drawings.

I've been very slack in the last couple of years, due to work commitments, but am beginning to surface. Bear with me and I'll see if I can dig them out.

Best regards,

Owen,
sorry for delay in responding, been away.

I would be over the moon if I could get hold of drawings or measurements based on a genuine set of sidescreen frames.

Whereabouts are you ?

Mail me directly on

if you prefer, regards and thanks,
